Peter Henry, President
In October 1994, Peter established Proteus Performance Management Inc. to provide specialized pension governance and investment consulting to Canadian retirement plans, foundations and endowments. Peter has provided the leadership and vision required to help the organization grow to where Proteus is considered a leader in the field of governance and investment consulting.
Over the past 23 years Peter has played an active role within the industry. Peter has served as a Governor of the North York General Hospital Foundation Board and chaired the Investment Committee for the North York General Hospital Board.
Peter graduated from Trent University in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics.
Prior to starting Proteus, Peter was the Eastern Regional Director of the London Capital Management Group, the investment management subsidiary of the London Life Insurance Company.
Gord Lewis, Senior Vice President, MBA
Gord joined Proteus in 1997 bringing his professionalism and business experience to the Canadian pension plan sponsor community. In his role, he helps deliver pension governance, investment consulting, performance measurement, and investment manager research and search. He was appointed Vice President in 2001, became a shareholder in Proteus in 2006 and Senior Vice President in 2015.
Gord has been published in major Canadian and international pension and investment publications, spoken as a subject matter expert on numerous occasions at industry conferences, sits on the Plans & Trusts Advisory Panel as well as the Board of Directors for Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation and is the Chair of the Foundation’s Investment Committee.
A graduate of the University of Western Ontario in 1987 with a Bachelors degree, Gord continued his studies at Queen’s University to receive an MBA in 1991.
Ryan Kuruliak, Senior Vice President, CFA, CIM, RPA
Ryan has been a key member of the Proteus investment consulting practice since 2001 and became a shareholder in Proteus in 2012. He is also a member of the Proteus Advisory Board.
Ryan has direct experience as the primary or co-consultant for many of Proteus’ clients including: defined benefit, defined contribution and hybrid pension plans; endowments and foundations; insurance entities; ultra-high net worth individuals; and Canada’s first Employee Life and Health Trust.
Ryan provides clients with expertise in: asset allocation strategy and implementation; investment manager research, due diligence, evaluation, reporting and search; governance evaluation and implementation; custodial/actuarial/DC record keeper review and search; and fiduciary education.
Ryan has spoken at industry conferences and events, has been published in numerous industry publications and contributes regular investment articles as a member of the Benefits Canada Expert Panel.
Ryan is a holder of the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation and a member of the Toronto CFA® Society. He has earned the Canadian Investment Manager (CIM) designation and has completed the requirements for the Retirement Plans Associate (RPA) designation offered by the International Foundation of Employee Benefits Plans and Dalhousie University. Ryan graduated from Brock University with a First Class Honours Degree in Computing and Business (BCB), specializing in finance.
Prior to joining Proteus, Ryan was employed in the Group Pensions division of a major Canadian life insurance company.
Jeff Gray, Vice President
Jeff joined Proteus in 2007 and has been in the group pension business for over 30 years.
Jeff provides lead and supporting consulting for a number of Proteus clients with capital accumulation and defined benefit programs, foundations and trusts.
Jeff is an Economics graduate from the University of Western Ontario and has a certificate in Pension Law from Osgoode Hall Law School.
Prior to joining Proteus, Jeff worked with a major insurance company in the Toronto market whose core business was group savings. Jeff was involved in the group pension plan design and management area; group annuity products for de-risking; product development and sales.
Lewis Powell, Consultant, CFA, CIPM
Lewis is a consultant at Proteus and has been part of the team since 2011.
Lewis’ investment expertise with a background in portfolio management and credit analysis has helped him design and implement investment mix structures for Proteus’ largest clients. He most recently restructured the asset mix of a $550 million jointly trusteed pension plan, as well as the foreign investment component of a $4 billion defined benefit pension plan of a major Canadian bank.
Lewis is a published thought leader with articles featured in the Pension and Benefits Monitor Magazine, and the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, Plans and Trust magazine.
Lewis is a holder of the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation and a member of the Toronto CFA® Society. He has also earned the right to use the Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement™ designation. Lewis graduated from Brock University’s Bachelor of Business Administration Honours program in the first class. Prior to joining Proteus, Lewis worked on the private debt/direct investment team of a large, Canadian, insurance firm.
Teimaz Binesh, Consultant
Teimaz is a consultant at Proteus and has been part of the Proteus team since January 2011.
As a senior member of the Proteus team, Teimaz is part of manager research initiatives, performs due-diligence, and creates/amends in-house databases in terms of qualitative and quantitative metrics. He also had lead consulting responsibilities, while providing additional support as the secondary consultant on many of our clients’ pension, endowment and foundation plans.
Teimaz has been involved in the investment consulting business since 2006, covering defined benefit plans, defined contribution plans and other institutional investment structures. He has taken an active role in asset allocation strategy; modeling and implementation; investment manager research, due diligence, evaluation and reporting.
Teimaz received a Bachelor of Commerce, with a major in finance and minor in economics, from Ryerson University in 2004. He continued his education by completing the Canadian Securities Course in 2004.
Prior to joining Proteus, Teimaz worked as a defined benefits analyst with a large, multi-national benefits consulting firm, focusing on pension plans, endowments and foundations. He also worked as a client account representative in group retirement services with a large Canadian-based insurer.
Neil Pinkowski, Director of Manager Research, CFA
Neil joined Proteus in 2013 as an investment and governance consultant.
With over 22 years of investment experience, Neil supports clients in a wide range of areas, including: investment policy; asset allocation; investment strategy; manager research and selection; portfolio structure; portfolio analysis; manager oversight; performance measurement and evaluation.
As the lead of the manager research team, Neil is responsible for implementing the firm’s research agenda and overseeing manager due diligence efforts. Neil provides guidance to a team of six research analysts, ensuring that the firm’s manager evaluation processes, quantitative analyses, and documentation all support a strong manager oversight and evaluation capability for clients.
Neil is a CFA® charterholder and a member of the Toronto CFA® Society.
Prior to joining Proteus, Neil worked as an investment consultant with a large Canadian investment firm, advising pension plans on all aspects of their investment programs.
Michael Scott, Consultant, CFA
Michael joined Proteus in 2012 and works closely with a number of institutions including defined benefit plans, defined contribution plans, and other institutional investment structures. The scope of his involvement includes asset mix modeling; investment manager reviews, searches and ongoing monitoring; manager research; pension governance initiatives; and monitoring pension legislative updates and developments. Prior to his current role as consultant, Michael was responsible for managing and reviewing the analysis and tasks performed by the team of analysts.
Michael is a CFA® charterholder and a member of the Toronto CFA® Society. He has completed the Canadian Securities Course (Honors) and he received a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in 2012 from Wilfrid Laurier University.
Megan Marsiglio, Manager of Communications & Social Media
Megan joined the Proteus team in September 2015 as Manager of Communications and Social Media for Proteus’ internal and external communications.
Megan is also part of Proteus’ business development team. She develops and maintains compelling content and a communications management presence to add value to the client experience, support Proteus' thought leadership and reinforce the Proteus brand.
Megan graduated from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Applied Science and thereafter obtained a post-graduate diploma in Corporate Communications and Public Relations from Centennial College.
Prior to working at Proteus, Megan gained agency experience at one of Canada’s top, marketing, communications agency – working on consumer and technology brands.
Adilya Kanyazova, Consultant
Adilya is a consultant at Proteus. She plays a role in various initiatives such as manager research, investment manager reviews and business development.
Prior to her current role, Adilya specialized in performance measurement and portfolio analysis for various pension plans as an investment analyst.
She is currently a 2018 Level III Candidate in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) Program.
Adilya graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with an Honours Bachelor of Business Administration and was recognized on the Dean's Honors List.
Matt Cramp, Investment Analyst, FRM
Matt joined Proteus in December 2016 and is part of the investment analyst team.
Matt has passed all three levels of the CFA® program and may be awarded the charter upon completion of the required work experience. Matt also completed the Canadian Securities Course, the Conduct and Practices Handbook Course, and has completed the Financial Risk Manager (FRM) Program.
Matt graduated from McMaster University with a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics.
Prior to starting at Proteus, Matt worked at an investment advising firm assisting retail clients, and as an analyst at a practice management software company for North American wealth managers.
Stella Nguyen, Investment Analyst
Stella joined Proteus in February 2016 and is part of the investment analyst team.
Stella has passed all three levels of the CFA® program and may be awarded the charter upon completion of the required work experience. She also completed the Canadian Securities Course and the Bloomberg Market Concepts course, and is a member of Women in Capital Markets.
Stella graduated from the Ivey Business School at Western University in 2014 with an Honours Bachelor of Arts.
Prior to joining Proteus, Stella finished a one-year rotational program at one of five major banks in Canada. She was also a part-time equity analyst for a U.S. based company.
Shaun Wilkes, Consultant, CFA
Shaun is a consultant at Proteus and has been part of the team since 2016.
Shaun works closely with several clients on a variety of initiatives including asset mix modeling, investment manager reviews, searches, ongoing monitoring and manager research. Shaun helps to establish Proteus’s capital market expectations by meeting regularly with other members of the asset mix committee.
Prior to his current role as consultant, Shaun was responsible for managing the workloads of the analyst team along with reviewing the analysis and tasks performed by them. In this role Shaun built and designed an internal reporting database to centralize data for improved analysis, improve performance reporting speed and accuracy, and provide easier access to quantitative information for manager research.
Shaun is a holder of the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation and a member of the Toronto CFA® Society. Shaun also completed the Canadian Securities Course, the Conduct and Practices Handbook Course and two Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) courses.
Shaun graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a dual major: finance and insurance, management.
Prior to starting at Proteus, Shaun was a client analyst at a practice management software company for North American wealth managers.
Zach Lee, Investment Analyst
Zach joined Proteus in June 2016 and is an investment analyst.
Zach has passed all three levels of the CFA® program and may be awarded the charter upon completion of the required work experience. He graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with an Honours BA in Economics and Financial Management.
Prior to joining Proteus, Zach worked as a summer associate in the finance department of a renewable energy company in Toronto. In his final year at Laurier he was the Vice President of Finance for the Laurier Consulting Club.
Gordie Howe, Investment Analyst
Gordie joined Proteus in July 2016 and is part of the Investment Analyst team.
Gordie is a 2017 Level I Candidate in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) Program. He graduated from the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) with a Bachelor of Commerce, specializing in Finance.
Prior to joining Proteus, Gordie interned at a business brokerage and M&A advisory firm in Toronto. In his final year at UTM he served as the Vice President of External Affairs for the Undergraduate Commerce Society, in charge of hosting events and fostering relations with representatives in the financial industry.
James Fracas, Investment Analyst
James joined Proteus in August 2017 and is part of the investment analyst team.
James is a 2018 Level II Candidate in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA©) Program. He graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a Bachelor of Business Administration, majoring in Finance and minoring in Economics.
Prior to joining Proteus, James worked at a leading software company on their accounting team.
Isa Cristello, Office Manager
Isa joined Proteus as an office manager in January 2006 and has over 17 years of office administration experience within diverse business sectors.
Isa’s diverse background has been recognized through progressive positions held throughout her career. She has successfully provided administrative support to various levels, including dealing with internal and external clients and contacts up to the executive level.
Isa graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in business management.
Andrew Smith, Advisor, CFA, ICD.D
About Andrew Smith
Andrew Smith became an advisor to Proteus in 2006.
Andrew has over 40 years of experience in the financial services sector. He began his career at National Trust in 1963 and held increasingly senior positions until his departure in 1984 at which time he was Vice-President, Investments. In 1985, he joined James P. Marshall, Inc., a small institutional investment consulting firm which he helped to build into a top-rated competitor with large global firms. In 2004, he established his own consulting practice (Natnook Inc.) with a focus on assisting organizations in achieving their financial and investment goals.
Andrew has extensive experience in working with defined benefit and defined contribution pension funds, foundations, insurance companies and public entities. He is a holder of the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation and has earned the Certified Director (ICD.D) designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors. In addition to working on consulting assignments with Proteus, Andrew is a director on a number of Boards including the University of Ottawa Pension Fund Investment Committee, GE Canada Pension Investment Committee, LawPro (Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company), Pro-Demnity Insurance, asrTrust (Auto Sector Retirees Health Care Trust) and the Sun Life Global Investments Independent Review Committee.
Robert Badun, Advisor
Robert Badun became an advisor to Proteus in 2014.
Robert has over 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry. From 1985 until 1998, Rob held a series of positions within the investment department at London Life. In 1998, Rob left his role as President, London Life Investment Management to co-found Highstreet Asset Management, a quantitative investment management firm catering to high net worth, foundation, and institutional clients.
In 2006, Rob and his partners sold 80% of Highstreet to AGF Investments, at which time Rob joined AGF as Executive Vice-President, Investments. Over the following 5 years, Rob played a key role in growing AGF’s institutional business and developing its investment teams.
Since leaving AGF in 2011, Rob has served on the Boards of Equitable Life and the Stratford Festival. He has an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Calgary and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario.
